The legacy associated with Porsche is highlighted and embodied by the beauty and engineering excellence of the 911 GT3. The show-stopping fifth generation Porsche was released at the Geneva International Motor Show and in North America at the New York Auto Show in 2013/2014 and proved itself the total package.
The Engine
This beast boasts a flat six-cylinder, 3.8-liter, direct-fuel injection engine developing a total 475 horsepower at 8 250 rpm. The 911 GT3, however, has custom titanium connecting rods and forged pistons that allow the marvel to hit 9000 rpm at the redline. Although sharing a few components with the 991 Carrera S, the resemblance is minimal with many custom pieces – such as the crank shaft and valve gear – created or adapted specially for the 911 GT3.
The Transmission
Dual-clutching transmission, unique and custom-made for the 911 GT3, provide unrivaled performance enhancement and true dynamic advantage. Some of the incredible features associated with this racing-esque gearbox include faster shifting, shorter gear ratios, shorter travel shift paddles and increased tactile feedback. Interestingly, this gearbox allows the driver to place the transmission in neutral by simultaneously pulling on the paddles.
The Handling
Porsche has included active rear-wheel steering for the first time to increase precision and improve the 911 GT3’s lateral dynamics. Per Porsche’s engineers, the rear wheels will steer in either the same direction or opposite to the direction of the front wheels based on the speed on the GT3; massively improving the agility and stability in the drive. The new 20-inch alloy wheels are what connect you to the road which include center-locking hubs instead of the outdated wheel bolts. Other highlights include electronically controlled driving dynamics, fully variable rear differential lock and unique dynamic engine mounts.
The Speed
The 911 GT3 has been shown to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.1-3.3 seconds and reaches the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds doing a blinding 126 mph. The GT3 boasts a top speed of 195 mph but is rumored to be able to reach 202 mph when the pedal is pushed to the metal.
The Look
As always, Porsche styling is impeccable. The exterior features unique to the 911 GT3 in alterations to create iconic front and rear facias – the aerodynamics complementary to the chiseled beauty- so although the chassis is based on that of the previous generation 911 Carrera, it’s distinctive face will never be lost on the road. The hybrid steel and aluminum construct gives the body a light but solid, secure feel; and the extra 1.7 inches in the rear make all the difference. The new large, fixed rear wing adds stability and aerodynamics unlike any other feature. The optional full LED headlights add a crisp look back to the rear-wheel sport-style road car.
Porsche’s over 60 years of brand experience and leadership has given them the edge they need to create cars that are both the beauty and the beast. Their work in the advancement of vehicle performance, safety, efficiency and styling has impacted millions. The fifth generation 911 GT3 is a perfect blend of racer and roadster with the ability to rouse the excitement and emotion in you that only Porsches can.
