The Porsche Taycan was the company’s flagship electric car first produced in 2019. The Taycan represents Porsche’s commitment to the future, not only in terms of the environment but also to mechanical achievement. Over the last few years, the Porsche Taycan has made leaps in improvements and has been at the forefront of the electric vehicle movement. This has culminated in the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT, the company’s most advanced electric vehicle to date. Boasting the highest speeds and largest power of any Taycan to date the electric sedan boasts more than just high speeds. Join us as we explore the Turbo GT, a vehicle that is truly at the forefront of automotive technology.
From Mission E To Taycan Turbo GT: A Brief History
Porsche’s first foray into electric vehicles started with a concept vehicle titled Mission E which debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2015. According to Autocar’s Greg Cable the Mission E “…has stolen the limelight at this year’s Frankfurt motor show…” mainly due to its promised high performance in speed and mileage.
It took four more years of research and development for the commercially available electric Porsche to be developed. The first Taycan was debuted again at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2019, and was released to the public in 2020. The Taycan quickly took center stage winning the World Car of the Year (WCOTY) awards for the best luxury car and performance car. In 2021 Porsche released the Taycan Cross Turismo and Taycan Sport Turismo. The Cross Turismo was designed to be an off road variation of the existing models, to appeal to the more adventurous driver. In 2024 Porsche has announced the release of the Taycan Turbo GT, the most powerful version of the car to date.
The Cutting-Edge Features of the Taycan Turbo GT
The Turbo GT boasts some of the most advanced features in automotive manufacturing to date. With a 760 kilowatt (1019 horsepower) overboost power with launch control, the turbo GT model can go from 0-60 mph (100 kph) in 2.3 seconds. The electric sports sedan can reach a top speed of 180 mph (290 kph), the highest of any Porsche Taycan. The all-wheel drive of the Turbo GT allows it to place more power on the road with less weight, translating into more speed. The power and speed marry well with the reduced weight, weighing less than the Taycan Turbo S by 165 lbs (74 kg) with the standard version. For further weight reduction, Porsche offers the Weissach pack option which lowers the total weight by a further 154 lbs (70 kg).
The 800-V technology allows for rapid charging and has fewer cable cross-sections, which makes the Turbo GT even lighter. Its electric batteries allow the flagship Taycan model a total mileage of 214-419 miles (345-675 km) depending on external conditions like weather and if you are driving in the countryside or a city. With adaptive air suspension, the electric sedan can react quickly to dynamic changes, with modes that focus on performance or comfort, depending on your needs.
The most exciting new feature of the Turbo GT is its Attack Mode, which grants the driver access to the total kilowatt power of the vehicle for 10 seconds, provided the car is at 30% or more charge. While performance is critical in a high-end car, there is more to a luxury vehicle than that, such as how it looks from the inside and the outside.
The Turbo GT comes with several leather interior options, ranging from silver accents to red detailing within the seats. Owners can also special order unique features such as bespoke door sills, leather lined sun visors, and aluminum pedals, with the option to select between 15 color palettes. Outside the vehicle you can choose your vehicle to match a specific color as well as fitting it with decals. The design isn’t just about looks, as with all things Porsche, performance and luxury is in everything they do.
The sleek form framed bucket seats provide comfort while holding occupants in place to help handle the high acceleration.
Drivers can also have options for quality of life options such as:
- Heated seats (front and back)
- Front seat ventilation
- Heads-up display
- Park assist
- Adaptive cruise control
- Lane-change assist
- Driver detection awareness
The infotainment system can also come with a passenger screen and a Burmester® 3D High-End Surround Sound System making those road trips with the family all the more enjoyable.
Breaking Records with the Turbo GT
Earlier this year driver Lars Kern drove the Taycan Turbo GT through the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife loop in 7 minutes and 7.5 seconds, a new record for a four-door saloon car. The Taycan narrowly missed the record for the fastest production car ever, which is held by the limited distribution Rimac Nevera at 7 minutes and 5 seconds. If you are not familiar with the Nürburgring, it commonly takes practiced drivers between 10 to 15 minutes to complete a lap, depending on the quality of car they are driving, and their ability. Porsche published this amazing record breaking run on their official YouTube, where you can see a master driver like Kern take a one-of-a-kind vehicle through one of the biggest tests in the driving world. Kern also broke another record with the Turbo GT at the WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, with a 1 minute 27 second lap, making it the fastest time for an electric vehicle.
