If you’re worried that electric cars are boring, the Porsche Taycan Turbo S may just blow your mind. Competing with the likes of Tesla, the Taycan Turbo S holds its own in every regard. From performance through to design, the Turbo S is an exciting and fun new addition to the Porsche family. Let’s have an up-close look at the Porsche Taycan Turbo S.
Serious Muscle
The Taycan Turbo S boasts an incredible 751 peak horsepower. The peak horsepower becomes available when the special ‘Launch mode’ is activated. This allows the Taycan to thunder to 60 miles an hour in 2.8 seconds! Which is faster than it would take you to repeat the last sentence. In the Taycan’s standard driving mode you have access to 617 HP which is beyond adequate. All of this power requires a clever design to bring it together. The Taycan does this by makes use of a series of batteries. These batteries do however require space, which is why the Taycan Turbo S is 18 inches longer than the Porsche 911 Turbo. The batteries sit low down on the Porsche’s floor which gives it an incredibly low center of gravity. The horsepower this car produces is needed as the Taycan weighs over 1,000 pounds more than the 911 Turbo S.
Spectacular Drivetrain
The Taycan boasts a responsive drivetrain with steering and brakes that provide a very natural feel. The brakes are particularly large and the all-wheel-drive creates a dynamic feel. The Taycan’s two electric motors distribute power seamlessly between the front and back wheels as required to create a balance of power. Behind the drivetrain is an 800-volt electrical system that allows for extremely quick charging. So much so that a battery can be charged from 5% to just about full in under 25 minutes. A big bonus is that Porsche is offering three years of free charging after you buy a Taycan.
Driving Is Sheer Fun
With this being a high powered electric car, the power delivery is instant and smooth. As soon as you touch the accelerator, the Taycan take off rapidly without hesitation. What makes the Taycan unique is it’s two-speed gear shifting unit in the front. The first gear powers the Porsche up to 62 mph which creates a large amount of torque being transferred to the road. The second more economical gear then shifts into place. Without a heavy engine to worry about, Porsche has created a perfectly balanced car that takes on curves with a perfect balance. The Taycan boasts button on the steering wheel which turns on automatic regenerative braking. This helps to convert kinetic energy back into stored power.
Impressive Design
The Taycan also looks incredible. On its front end, you can immediately notice the four-point LED headlights. These boast a feature called ‘matrix beam’ which combines all of the light functions into one component and creates a floating illusion. Lateral air intakes lie ahead of the front wheels which improve the Taycan’s aerodynamics. Automatic extending door handles welcome you into the sporty interior cabin. The four-seat configuration is deep which allows a tall person to sit comfortably in the back. A really impressive feature is the 16.8-inch curved display instrument cluster. The curved display flows with the shape of the steering wheel and offers some direct touch features. Seriously cool! The Taycan boasts Apple Carplay and built-in satellite radio.
The Taycan Doesn’t Come Cheap
Perhaps a down-side of the Porsche Taycan Turbo S is that its expensive starting at $185,000. The good news is that Porsche has recently unveiled more affordable Taycan models which start closer to the $100,000 mark. What we do know is that the Taycan Turbo S is a seriously impressive car that will offer you countless fun while driving. With its environmentally friendly, yet incredibly powerful electric powertrain, the Taycan sets the level high for other sports car manufacturers to follow in.
